General Information about Making Pipes and Bongs

Some of the reasons people make there own smoking devices are:

1. It brings out their creativity and making things can be a lot of fun. Especially when you know your smoking out of something that you created.

2. It's much less expensive than buying pipes or bongs. (Although, store bought ones are generally a better quality)

3. You can make it at home and don't have to go anywhere provided you have the materials.

Pipes are the most basic types of smoking instruments because they are portable and take less work to make. Pipes are fairly simple and don't take a lot of time to make. We'll start with the basic concepts of how to make pipes first.

The design of a pipe has 4-5 must have factors.

-A bowl which is the place that holds the tobacco.
-A place for your mouth to inhale smoke from.
-A chamber for the smoke to go that connects the bowl and the mouth piece. For a pipe, the chamber does not have to be big at all. It just has to be big enough for smoke to get through.
-You want to make your piece air tight so that the almost all the air going into your lungs originally comes from your mouth.
-(Optional/Highly recommended) A carb for clearing the chamber of smoke. You don't want to waste any smoke. The carb is just a small hole that you hold while inhaling and when your almost done you release it so you can inhale the rest of the smoke in the chamber. Generally it should be placed close to the bowl.

Bongs are a little more complicated to make and generally take more time however they are fun to make and worth every second. The hardest part about making them is it becomes more difficult to make them airtight which is key in order to have a fully functional bong. All the points for making a pipe are included in making bongs and here are some extra points to note about bongs.

-The chamber for a bong should be about the size of a water bottle. (It can be bigger or smaller depending on what you have/want. Be creative!)
-A stem is needed to make a bong which is a hollow tube or cylinder object (hollow pen). The bowl should be connected to a stem which goes into the chamber and the end that is not connected to the bowl should be submerged in water.
-To make it air tight a substance that is malleable should be used such as gum. If you plan on keeping your creation you should look into sealants.

These are the basics of making a pipe or bong. Water pipes are pretty much the same thing as bongs, they are generally about the size of a pipe.

There are also gravity bongs which involve the use of suction and sometimes water.

These are pretty much all the main points that you need to know in order to make your own smoking devices.
